Boomer Beauty
Its Monday and I'm tired from an insane weekend of family activities. I've been so exhausted that it should've been no surprise to see a pimple on my chin. Of course, I immediately panicked and ran straight for the makeup bag to try and find a way to cover it up. As I rummaged through an infinite number of products I realized that most of these no longer work on me like before. What once made me look glamorous or cutting-edge now just makes me look clownish. The realization forced me to take a closer look in the mirror. It's not the products that have changed, but me. My cheekbones are more defined. There are wrinkles around my eyes and deeper lines around the mouth. The texture of my skin is different to. All at once I felt embarrassed and a little scared of what is happening to me and I was rudely reminded of what it was like to be a teenager. Caught somewhere between infancy and adulthood. No longer who I had been as a kid, but not quite an adult yet. At 44, THAT is how I feel. Like I am no longer my former, youthful self, but not quite sure who exactly I'm becoming... All at once, the fears and insecurities of adolescence came rushing back. I found myself wondering if my wrinkles made me look old or distinguished? Did my pronounced cheekbones seem exotic or skeletal? Most of all, was I still desirable as a middle-aged woman and if not, what did that mean? I must confess, I came away from the mirror with no real answers. I would love to hear from all of you other boomer beauties out there who are going through this confusing stage of maturation - what are your thoughts and how can I learn to love the person staring back at me in the mirror?
